Senior pitcher Rachel Garcia (Palmdale, Calif.) of the UCLA softball team was named the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and presented with the prestigious Honda Cup during the 45^th anniversary broadcast of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) show presented by Honda on CBS Sports Network, at the CBS Studios in New York, NY. Honda has served as the program’s presenting sponsor for 35 years.

Garcia is a two-time Honda Cup winner after garnering the honor for the Class of 2019 and it is the first time in CWSA history that a winner has won back-to-back honors outright. Maya Moore (Basketball, Connecticut, 2011, 2010-tie) and Tracy Caulkins (Florida, Swimming & Diving, 1982, 1984-tie) are also two-time winners having each shared the award at least once.

The Top Three finalists from the Class of 2021 included Garcia along with senior volleyball standout setter Madison Lilley of the University of Kentucky and senior gymnast sensation Anastasia Webb of the University of Oklahoma.

The Top Three were selected by a voting of nearly 1,000 NCAA member schools and the Honda Cup winner was chosen by the Board of Directors of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program. Previous Honda Cup winners include Rachel Garcia (2019, Softball), Simone Manuel (2018, Swimming & Diving), Katie Ledecky (2017, Swimming & Diving), Breanna Stewart (2016, Basketball), Missy Franklin (2015, Swimming & Diving), Maya Moore (2011, 2012, Basketball), Candace Parker (2008, Basketball), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (1985, Track & Field), Mia Hamm (1994, Soccer) and Misty May (1999, Volleyball).

Overall, this is UCLA’s sixth Honda Cup award. Prior UCLA Honda Cup winners include Natasha Watley (2003, Softball), Lisa Fernandez (1993, Softball), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (1985, Track & Field) and Ann Meyers (1978, Basketball).

Garcia is a two-time Honda Sport Award winner for Softball and a three-time Honda Award finalist. She was named the 2021 Senior CLASS Award winner for Softball and the Pac-12 Player of the Year for the third time in a row and most recently was named the 2021 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Player for the third time in her career. She is a four-time NFCA first-team All-American and All-Pac-12 first-team honoree and will be a 2021 Olympian with Team USA.

She ended the regular season leading the nation in ERA (0.60) and a 17-1 record, with 162 strikeouts in 18.1 innings pitched entering the WCWS. Averaging .342 at the plate, she led the team all year in on-base percentage (.473) and finished as the leader in slugging percentage (.708).

She finishes her career at UCLA ranked tied for second all-time in career saves (11), third in strikeouts (996), fourth in wins (99), fifth in plate appearances (149) and sixth in innings pitched (748.2). In addition to the announcement of the Honda Cup winner as the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the Top Three, the broadcast featured the presentation of the Honda Inspiration Award to Asjia O’Neal (Texas, Volleyball) and a celebration of 45 years of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards featuring past Honda Cup winners.
